Vintage Shahsavan Soumak, 38″×/54″, D0201
Vintage Shahsavan Soumak, 38″×/54″, D0201
Vintage Shahsavan Horse Soumak (D0201) 38"x54. This all wool-on-wool Soumak piece, made in northwest Persia, features beautifully 'drawn' horses in rows from the top to the bottom of the piece. These items were often used with saddles. The Shahsavan people are known for their horsemanship and love of horses. This piece is perfect for displaying on a wall or as a table covering. The weave is “soumak”.  Some westerners call it “brocade”.  This method of weaving is typical of the Shahsevan who almost never produced a pile or knotted rug (or, if they did, very few survive to be found).  A beneficial consequence of the soumak weave is that the images on this rug are very clearly defined and sharply delineated.  Many (indeed most) oriental or ‘Persian’ rugs are pile carpets.  That means that the pile is knotted between warps (vertical strands) (either symmetrically or unsymmetrically) and held in place by one or more wefts pulled down horizontally across the knots.  However, in a soumak rug such as this the yarn/weft is woven across / twisted around the warps.  Often, but not always, two warps are taken at a time.  There are no ‘knots’ per se.  Sometimes this method is called ‘braiding”.  An advantage of soumak weaving is that the images woven into the rug are very sharply defined and delineated, as can be seen in this rug.

Vintage Persian Nain 34.5″ x 51.5″ D0294, with silk highlights
Vintage Persian Nain 34.5″ x 51.5″ D0294, with silk highlights
Vintage Nain with Wool and Silk Pile Dim: 34.5"x51.5" Condition: Excellent Remarks: These Persian Oriental rugs are woven in and around the city of Nain in central Persia in Isfahan province, approximately 60 miles to the east of the city of Isfahan. They are relatively new compared to the antique rugs of ancient weaving centers such as Kashan, . All Nain rugs are knotted by hand using asymmetrical Persian knots with wool and silk pile on a cotton warp. In the 1920's Nain was one of the areas that produced Isfahan carpets in skilled workshops. Then beginning in the 1930s it developed it's own identity and reputation for very fine precise workshop carpets woven on a cotton foundation. In fact the word Nain is sometimes used in Iran as a synonym for 'fine'. Nains are classified in the trade today based on how many threads make up the warp. If one were to take a single strand of the fringe and pull it apart (unravel it) one would find either two or three threads in the one strand of fringe. the fewer the number of strands, the finer the rug.

Sale! Vintage Kashmir Isfahan Pictorial Design, Wool and Silk, 71″ x 42″, D0310
Vintage Kashmir Isfahan Pictorial Design, Wool and Silk, 71″ x 42″, D0310
Vintage Kashmir, Isfahan Pictorial Design, Wool and Silk Dimensions:  84” x 48” D0310: Vintage Kashmiri pictorial rug, with Isfahan (Persian) design. Region of Origin:  city of Srinagar and environs, Union Territory of Kashmir, India. Age and Condition:   Early to mid 1960’s.  Overall very fine condition, with good pile overall no foundation or knot nodes exposed.. Fabric and weave:  Kork/pashmina wool pile with natural silk highlights; double cotton weft.  Asymmetric (aka Persian or Sennah) knot, with an exceptionally high knot count of 576 KPSI.  The exceptional fineness of the kork wool, the sinuous wefts, and the absence of depressed knot nodes combine to give a carpet of outstanding softness and pliability.   Colors:  The color pallet, consisting of nine different shades, is soft and mellow dominated by white/ivory, shades of red, and shades of blue.
  • ivory
  • white
  • indigo: midnight blue, dark, and sky blue
  • reds: wine red, and pink
  • brown
  • russet
  • pale green
  Remarks:
  • This rug was woven in the 1960’s, approximately twenty years after the end of the British Raj (1858-1947).  Kashmiri carpet weavers then continued the use of Persian designs, but the quality of their materials and their weaving greatly improved, as is evidenced in this rug.
  • The main feature of this rug is the depiction of a large speckled white ibis turned to its proper left, with its long sinuous neck wrapped around a water plant as it looks to a fledgling. (Ibises are an indigenous species in Kashmir; they also are to be found in the famed Isfahan bird sanctuary.)  The main field is populated with several types of flowers and leafy vines surrounding the ibis.  The multiple borders likewise display a variety of flowers, leaves and sinuous vines.
  • This is a rug of exceptional elegance and esthetic appeal. There is an interesting contrast between the soft, harmonious colors of the rug and its graceful lines, producing overall a soothing effect on the viewer, and the tension of the main figure of the rug, the ibis, which strains to find its fledgling.   Here the rug’s designer has employed a well-known technique of high artistry wherein the viewer is drawn in to understand the image:  as the figure of the ibis is not immediately apparent at first observation (it blends in with the background), the viewer must focus her attention in order to recognize what is being depicted.

SOLD Vintage Zanjan Northwest Persian, 68″ x 86″ D0263
D0263: Vintage Zanjan Northwest Persian, Azeri, Qajar tribe Influence Dim: 68"x 86" Summary: Zanjan is a very old city. Archeological eviidence shows active salt mining in the area. Salt was an important trade commodity and was traded on the so-called "Silk Route" of which Zanjan was an important stop. Remarks: In the Persian era, prior to the Russian invasion and conquest of the Caucasus, the Qajar tribe were both rulers and the dominant Persian tribe of the Caucasus. Following the Russian victory in the Caucasus in 1806 to 1828, the Shia Azeris of the Qajar tribe had to withdraw and  whole villages were transplanted into the Tabriz area, Zanjan, Qazvin, and Hamadan region. They brought their rug design and weaving techniques with them and for that reason, you see many Caucasus type elements in these rugs as well as elements of their new homeland.  As a result, many of the newer ones share similarity to the older ones, but also reflect the designs of the regions they relocated to.  Today,  Zanjan Province is populated primarily by Azeri Persians who are the descendents of the primarily Shia Azeris who withdrew from the Caucasus following the Russian conquest.
