Description
Antique Baluch Prayer Rug, ca. 1910. D0213. Dim: 28″ x 47″. Hand-spun wool on a natural wool foundation.
Condition: Very good with overall muted colors from naturally derived dyes. Almost entirely intact with the original two cord selvage (sides) and full kilim on both ends.
Remarks: This is a tribal prayer rug, displaying the mihrab (prayer arch) at its top. The Baluch were/are a nomadic and semi-nomadic tribe whose flatweave, pile and soumak weaves are created primarily as utilitarian tribal pieces. The colors of aubergine, grass green, goldenrod yellow, blue, and different shades of brown are all natural native colors derived from the habitat of the Baluch.
